Definition

Under the direction of the Executive Officer, Chief Athletic Inspector, or Assistant Chief Athletic Inspector of the State Athletic Commission, to do work involved in enforcing the State law and rules of the State Athletic Commission regulating boxing, kickboxing, and martial arts; and to do other related work.

Typical Tasks

Attends boxing, kickboxing, and full-contact martial arts contests and enforces the State law and rules of the State Athletic Commission including: makes recommendations regarding the issuance of licenses to boxers, managers, seconds, referees, matchmakers, and other licensees; when directed, investigates applications for licenses and writes reports on the findings; evaluates officials' performance including licensed referees and judges; collects fines and purses withheld from contestants as penalties or forfeitures; instructs club officials, managers, and other interested groups or individuals regarding the requirements of the law and the rules of the State Athletic Commission regulating boxing, kickboxing, and full-contact martial arts matches; reviews referees' reports, calculates attendance, and submits reports of gross receipts and State taxes at live events and satellite telecasts to the headquarters office; appears and testifies at Commission hearings regarding the status of boxers and other licensees on disciplinary actions; submits reports of work done.

Minimum Qualifications

Experience: Either

 

1. Paid employment in boxing, kickboxing, or full-contact martial arts sports in several matches or exhibitions as an official, participant, manager, club owner, matchmaker, trainer, box- office employee, or as a news media reporter reporting boxing, kickboxing, or full-contact martial arts matches. or

 

2. Two years of experience and involvement in the fields of boxing, kickboxing, or full-contact martial arts or experience and involvement in the collection of State revenue assessment and of State taxes.

Knowledge and Abilities

Knowledge of: State law and rules of the State Athletic Commission regulating boxing, kickboxing, and full-contact martial arts matches; procedure, equipment, and terminology of boxing, kickboxing, and full-contact martial arts sports in California; methods used in attempting to evade the laws and rules regulating licensed boxing, kickboxing, and full-contact martial arts; general knowledge of State operations dealing with collection of revenue, calculations of budgets, and assessments of State taxes.

 

Ability to: Read and write English at a level required for successful job performance; interpret and apply the State law and the rules of the State Athletic Commission regulating boxing, kickboxing, and full-contact martial arts and detect evasions; make attendance estimates, compute ticket sales, and prepare simple financial reports; write concise but comprehensive reports; maintain cooperative relations with persons contacted in the course of the work; analyze situations accurately and adopt an effective course of action; follow oral and written directions.

Special Personal Characteristics

Ability to qualify for a surety bond; keenness of observation; firmness; and tact.

Additional Desirable Qualification

Education equivalent to completion of the twelfth grade.
