Business Service Assistant (Specialist) Examination

Business Service Assistant (Specialist) Exam

The first step in getting a job with the State of California is passing an exam. CalHR is now offering an exam for the Business Services Assistant(Specialist)classification. Exams are required to obtain eligibility for job vacancies.

Position Description

This is the entry, developmental and first (Specialist) working level in the series. While in a trainee capacity, incumbents work under close supervision and learn to perform a variety of technical and analytical business service activities. As their skills and abilities develop, incumbents are expected to perform with increasing independence. Fully trained incumbents may, under supervision, independently perform technical business service work of a routine nature in a variety of functions; assist in the performance of more difficult and complex technical and analytical business service work; or be assigned responsibility for one or more of the least complex business service functions which are Equipment and Supplies Management, Support Services and Building Maintenance. (Analytical business service work performed at this level is described as that which would otherwise be appropriate for a Management Services Technician.) Positions at this level are nonsupervisory but may serve as lead over lower level clerical and other staff. Positions are permanently allocated to this class when the major portion of the duties does not include independent responsibility for the more difficult and complex assignments found at the Business Service Officer I (Specialist) level.

Testing Information

  • To protect public health and safety as we respond to novel coronavirus (COVID-19), CalHR has postponed all CalHR (in-person) written exams until further notice. All eligibility lists for those referenced in-person examinations which have already expired, or are due to expire before the applicable examinations are available again—either in-person or online—will be extended for 12 months from the date of the last examination, or until a digital examination becomes available. CalHR is working diligently to digitize all in-person examinations. If an in-person examination is made available online, prior to the 12 month extension, CalHR will put in place a 90 day grace period effective the date the digital examination is made available, so that applicants can take the newly digitized examination and maintain their eligibility. We will continue to provide the public updated information as it becomes available. We appreciate your patience as we work to minimize new introduction of the virus and delay community spread.
