Definition
Under general direction, to plan, direct and supervise personnel of the rehabilitation therapy program of a State facility; coordinate rehabilitation activities with other interdisciplinary services of the facility; perform rehabilitational therapy work; and do other related work.
Typical Tasks
An incumbent in this class plans and supervises the rehabilitation therapy program in a State facility and coordinates these activities with other institutional programs; trains technical and nontechnical assistants; assigns, supervises, and evaluates their work; takes or recommends appropriate action with respect to work performance; develops policies and procedures related to the rehabilitation therapy program; leads, instructs, and encourages patients in a program of�individual and group activities of a physical, social and cultural nature, with the interdisciplinary group; plans treatment goals for specific patients; assists in coordinating rehabilitation therapy with other therapeutic programs; observes patients' reactions and progress and keeps clinical notes and records to be�included in case histories; prepares reports; assists in the preparation of the budget; and orders necessary equipment and supplies.
Minimum Qualifications
Either I
Two years of experience in California state service performing the duties of a Recreation, Music, Art or Dance Therapist. Or II Graduation from a recognized college with major work in a rehabilitation therapy specialty. and
Two years of supervised rehabilitation therapy experience.
Knowledge and Abilities
Knowledge of: Theory and practice of the mental and physical rehabilitation of mentally and physically handicapped persons; therapeutic principles and techniques of group and individual activities used in rehabilitation therapy, and skill in their application; various types of rehabilitation and entertainment activities; basic pathology involved in diseases and injuries resulting in mental and physical handicaps; physical and psychological problems of the handicapped person; and the department's affirmative action objectives.
Ability to: Plan and supervise a comprehensive rehabilitation therapy program for an institution; provide leadership of various types of rehabilitation and entertainment activities; interpret rehabilitation therapy activities to hospital personnel, relatives, patients, and others; teach others basic activity skills; prepare reports and keep records to be included in case histories; analyze situations accurately and adopt an effective course of action; effectively contribute to the department's affirmative action objectives.
