Definition
Under direction, to make lithographic plates for use on offset presses; and to do other related work.
Typical Tasks
Exposes and develops plates and proofs by the use of vacuum frames, high intensity lights, automatic plate processors and other related equipment; programs and operates an automated platemaker system; copy prep the work to be done on the automated platemaking system including paste-up, imposition and ticket instructions; maintains production and quality control standards; performs maintenance requirements on the entire system; assists in the general preparatory work; instructs assistants on all related camera operations and maintenance of all equipment; communicates with other departments on production procedures.
Minimum Qualifications
Either I
One year of experience in California state service as a Compositor (Imposition and Paste-Up) or Photocompositor.
Or II
Three years experience as a Lithographic Pre-Press Assistant in California state service.
Or III
The equivalent of an Associate of Arts Degree in Printing Technology.
Or IV
Completion of a recognized apprenticeship as a lithographer, which must have included experience involving copy preparation, platemaking and related pre-press duties.
Knowledge and Abilities
Knowledge of: Methods, materials, and equipment used in lithographic platemaking; principles of offset printing; layout, markup, imposition camera and data processing.
Ability to: Read and write English at a level required for successful job performance; maintain a high quality of plates for use of lithographic presses; maintain equipment and practice good housekeeping; instruct assistants; work independently; analyze situations and take effective action.
