Definition
Under supervision, to read or hold copy in connection with its comparison with printed matter in the proof; and to do other related work.
Typical Tasks
Reads copy silently as the Proofreader reads his/her proofs aloud or reads the copy aloud to the Proofreader; notes differences between the copy held and the Proofreader's proof, and checks other items desired by the Proofreader; files copy and proof.
Knowledges and Abilities
Knowledge of: Grammar, word usage, word division, spelling syntax, pronunciation, and punctuation and proofreading procedures, terminology, and symbols; detecting discrepancies between proof and copy.
Ability to: Read and write English at a level required for successful job performance; read rapidly and accurately; follow oral and written directions.
Special Personal Characteristics
Reliability, patience, clear enunciation, and normal hearing and vision.
Additional Desirable Qualifications
Education equivalent to completion of the twelfth grade and experience as a copyholder.
