Scope

This series specification describes two specialized classes in the mechanical field. These classes are used for positions in the adjustment, servicing, and repair of motorcycles and auxiliary equipment.

Factors Affecting Position Allocation

Level, variety and complexity of work, supervision received, latitude for independent judgment and action, and degree of supervisory responsibilities are the differentiating factors between classes.

Definition of Levels

Motorcycle Mechanic

This is the journeyperson working level of the Motorcycle Mechanic series. A Motorcycle Mechanic performs work involved in the adjustment, servicing, and repair of motorcycles and auxiliary equipment.

Lead Motorcycle Mechanic

This is the working leadperson level of the series. The Lead Motorcycle Mechanic works along with mechanics and performs the duties of a journeyperson in the trade in addition to the responsibility for laying out jobs; advises and instructs officer trainees in the proper maintenance and repair procedures; estimates the cost of repairs, keeps simple records, and makes reports; determines the need for and orders materials and supplies; instructs and supervises assistants.

Minimum Qualifications

Motorcycle Mechanic

Possession of a driver license valid for the operation of any two-wheeled motorcycle. and Three years of experience as a journey level motorcycle mechanic. One year of this experience shall have included major repair, overhaul, and maintenance of large displacement motorcycles of the type used by traffic law enforcement agencies.

Lead Motorcycle Mechanic

Possession of a driver license valid for the operation of any two-wheeled motorcycle. and Either I One year of experience in the California state service performing the duties of a Motorcycle Mechanic.

Or II

Four years of experience as a journey level motorcycle mechanic. Two years of this experience shall have included major repair, overhaul, and maintenance of large displacement motorcycles of the type used by traffic law enforcement agencies.

Knowledge and Abilities

Motorcycle Mechanic

Knowledge of: Methods, materials, tools, and equipment used in the adjustment, repair, and maintenance of motorcycles and auxiliary equipment used in law enforcement work.

Ability to: Properly adjust, repair, and operate motorcycles and auxiliary equipment; inspect motorcycles and locate defects; use tools required to repair motorcycles and auxiliary equipment; do welding and brazing work; fabricate special motorcycle equipment; maintain motorcycles service records and inventory records of parts and supplies; follow oral and written directions; analyze situations accurately and take effective action; read and write at an appropriate level.

Lead Motorcycle Mechanic

Knowledge of: All of the above, and principles of effective supervision, record keeping, and requisitioning and storing supplies.

Ability to: All of the above, and estimate repairs; demonstrate mechanical adjustment procedures and techniques to officer trainees in a formal training class; design, fabricate, and test new equipment; contact and negotiate with vendors; requisition and store a supply of automotive parts; make simple reports; instruct and supervise assistants.

Special Personal Characteristics

Motorcycle Mechanic

Willingness to work outside normal working hours on an emergency or standby basis; a satisfactory driving record; and willingness to operate a motorcycle.

Lead Motorcycle Mechanic

All of the above, and willingness to attend and complete a certified Basic Instructors Training class and EMT training class.

Drug Testing Requirement

Motorcycle Mechanic

Applicants for positions in this class are required to pass a drug screening test. Testing of current employees who are applicants in an examination or who are transferring is permitted only if the person does not have a current appointment to a class for which drug testing is a requirement.
