Definition
Under general direction, to be the technical specialist on corrosion control for engineering structures in the State's water resources development program or the State's highway construction program; and to do other related work.
Typical Tasks
Provides consultation and technical advice on all matters pertaining to corrosion control in the design, construction, maintenance, and operation of the California Water Facilities or the California Highway System; participates in the preparation and reviews engineering drawings, specifications, and reports to determine potential corrosion problems and special provisions pertaining to corrosion control devices, techniques, and materials; performs research and provides direction on the design of corrosion control devices; establishes standards, methods, procedures, and techniques for corrosion control; performs or directs research of corrosion control problems; maintains contacts with manufacturers and applicators of protective coatings and keeps abreast of current developments in the field; trains and instructs employees in the design, installation, operation, and maintenance of corrosion control systems, including cathodic protection; evaluates the performance; and recommends the use of engineering materials and protective coatings; plans and coordinates field and laboratory tests and investigations into complex corrosion control problems and studies; makes field and shop inspections concerning the application and performance of protective coatings and corrosion control devices; prepares comprehensive technical papers and reports; provides technical assistance to other State agencies relating to corrosion control and prevention.
Minimum Qualifications
Experience: Five years of corrosion engineering experience, two years of which shall have involved the design, research, and analysis of corrosion control systems and protective materials at a level comparable in responsibility to that of an Associate Engineer in the California state service or the GS11 level in the Federal service. and
Education: Equivalent to graduation from college with major work in engineering or a closely related field. (Additional qualifying experience may be substituted for the required education on a year- for-year basis.)
Knowledge and Abilities
Knowledge of: Principles, procedures, materials and techniques of corrosion for engineering structures; methods of testing and evaluating protective coatings and other corrosion control devices; designs of cathodic protection facilities; design principles and construction practices pertaining to major water storage and conveyance structures and pumping and hydroelectric plants and to highway, bridge, and appurtenant structures; codes and safety orders affecting corrosion control structures; department's Affirmative Action Program objectives; a manager's role in the Affirmative Action Program and the processes available to meet affirmative action objectives.
Ability to: Inspect and detect corrosion control problems; perform or direct research of corrosion control problems; establish and maintain cooperative relations with those contacted in the course of work; prepare technical reports, specifications and manuals, and conduct training courses; analyze situations accurately and adopt an effective course of action; effectively contribute to the department's affirmative action objectives.
