Definition

Under direction in a State institution, to upholster, repair, and recover chrome and wood furniture; to install and repair floor coverings and window shades; to supervise and instruct helpers from the resident population; and to do other related work.

Typical Tasks

Repairs and renovates sofas, chairs, and other upholstery; makes, repairs, fits, and renovates window shades; installs and maintains venetian blinds and awnings; takes measurements for and installs curtains and draperies; as an incidental assignment, cuts and lays carpets, linoleum, and other floor coverings; makes and replaces mattress covers, truck tops, tarpaulin, and other canvas products; renovates and repairs mattresses and pillows; works with leather, plastics, fabrics, and cordage; instructs and supervises helpers from the resident population; orders materials, keeps records, and prepares reports.

Minimum Qualifications

Experience: Two years of experience as a journeyperson upholsterer.

Knowledge and Abilities

Knowledge of: Practices, materials, and equipment used in upholstering; various types of upholstering materials and their appropriate uses; principles of effective supervision.

 

Ability to: Instruct and work with helpers from the resident population; sew, pack, cut, and estimate upholstering materials; repair and renovate mattresses and pillows; analyze situations accurately and take effective action; keep records and prepare reports; read and write at a level appropriate to the classification.

Sympathetic understanding of and willingness to work with the resident population of a State institution and personal cleanliness.
