Definition
Under supervision of the Head Museum Guard, to supervise a group of Museum Guards and Museum Security Officers at the California Museum of Science and Industry and Exposition Park; and to do other related work.
Typical Tasks
Supervises the Museum Guard and Museum Security Officer force in guarding and protecting museum buildings, exhibits, and adjoining grounds against theft, damage, and vandalism during an assigned shift; receives and instructs visiting groups and individuals; assigns Guards and Security Officers to stations as scheduled, and may perform working level security duties in a relief capacity; checks periodically for total building coverage; assists in training of Museum Guards and Museum Security Officers in basic requirements, responsibilities, safety rules, public relation techniques, and protection of museum exhibits and property; makes recommendations in performance evaluation of Museum Guards and Museum Security Officers; assists Museum Guards and Museum Security Officers in apprehending persons disturbing the peace and order; assists Chief Museum Security Officer in the conduct of investigation of incidents, the handling of large groups of visitors, and the preparation of records and reports; assumes the duties and responsibilities of the Chief Museum Security Officer in his/her absence.
Minimum Qualifications
Either I
Six months of experience in the California state service performing duties of Museum Security Officer; or
One year of experience in the California state service performing the duties of a Museum Guard.
Or II
Experience: Six months of experience in charge of a group of building guards or watchpersons; and Education: Equivalent to completion of the twelfth grade.
Knowledge and Abilities
Knowledge of: Program and procedures involved in providing protection to the public buildings, exhibits, and surrounding park areas; law enforcement principles, use and care of firearms; principles of effective supervision; Department's Affirmative Action Program objectives; a manager's role in the Affirmative Action Program and the processes available to meet affirmative action objectives.
Ability to: Supervise Museum Guards and Museum Security Officers; interpret and enforce museum rules with firmness and tact; think and act quickly and effectively in emergencies; write clear and accurate reports; stand and work for long periods of time; analyze situations accurately and take effective action; effectively contribute to the department's affirmative action objectives.
