Definition
Under direction, to operate a teletypewriter machine in connection with the sending and receiving of messages over a teletype communication system; to type messages telephoned into the teletype station; and to do other related work.
Typical Tasks
Types messages telephoned into the teletype station; types messages on the teletypewriter from rough drafts or clear manuscripts; removes completed messages from the machine and gives or forwards them to the proper person or persons making the connections on a teletypewriter switch board; keeps a file of messages sent and received; sees that paper or tape in the machine is renewed sufficiently for receiving purposes; secures information from the files.
Minimum Qualifications
One year of experience in operating a teletypewriter requiring use of a teletypewriter keyboard. (Typing experience may be substituted for the teletypewriter experience on a month-for-month basis up to a maximum substitution of nine months of experience.)
Knowledge and Abilities
Knowledge of: Procedure used in sending and receiving messages over a teletype system; names of California towns and cities and transportation and highway systems connecting these points.
Ability to: Read and write English at a level required for successful job performance; operate a teletypewriter accurately at a speed of 40 words a minute; spell and use abbreviations correctly; follow oral and written directions; analyze situations accurately and take effective action.
Special Personal Characteristics
Ability to think and act quickly in emergencies.
Additional Desirable Qualification
Education equivalent to completion of the twelfth grade.
