Definition
Under direction, to do sheet metal construction and repair work; may instruct, lead or supervise inmates, wards or resident workers; and to do other related work.
Typical Tasks
Constructs, installs, maintains, inspects, and repairs sheet metal parts; develops, cuts, forms, and fastens common sheet metals into various sheet metal objects; maintains a sheet metal shop; advises in the selection, ordering, and storing of sheet metal supplies and equipment; makes rough sketches and estimates the costs of new sheet metal work; keeps simple records and makes reports; consults with other tradespeople; instructs and leads unskilled assistants.
Minimum Qualifications
Either I
Experience: Completion of a recognized apprenticeship in sheet metal work. (Apprentices who are within six months of completing their apprenticeship program may be admitted to the examination, but they must present evidence of completion of a recognized apprenticeship before they may be appointed.)
Or II
Experience: Four years of experience as a sheet metal worker including experience such as constructing, installing, maintaining, inspecting, and repairing sheet metal parts; preparing, forming and fastening sheet metal into various sheet metal objects; and maintaining a sheet metal shop. and
Education: Completion of 576 hours of formalized technical instruction relating to sheet metal work offered by such established programs as Job Corps; Skill Centers; ROP; Trades Schools; Military; and JTPA (Joint Training Partnership Act). (An Associate of Arts Degree or Certificate of Completion in metals industry technology may be substituted for the 576 hours of technical instruction.) Students who are within six months of completing their degree will be admitted to the examination but they must present evidence of completion prior to appointment. (Two years of additional qualifying experience may be substituted for required education.)
Knowledge and Abilities
Knowledge of: Principles, methods, materials, tools, and equipment used in sheet metal work including the safety practices; various sheet metals and their characteristics and uses.
Skill in: Laying out, developing and performing sheet metal work.
Ability to: Do arc and acetylene welding and brazing; make rough sketches and make estimates of materials and labor; read blueprints and work from plans and specifications; keep simple records and make reports; follow oral and written directions and work cooperatively with others; instruct and lead unskilled assistants; read and write at a level appropriate to the classification.
