Definition
Under supervision in a State institution, to perform the less skilled tasks in making and repairing clothing and linen; to instruct and work with helpers from the resident population; may instruct, lead or supervise inmates, wards or resident workers; and do other related work.
Typical Tasks
Assists in cutting, making, fitting, and finishing dresses, gowns, uniforms, linen, curtains, draperies, and other articles; alters and repairs clothes and linen; operates a power or treadle sewing machine, electric cutters, cloth drill, buttonhole, and darning machines; assists with the keeping of records; assigns work to and instructs helpers from resident population.
Minimum Qualifications
One year of employment in the making or repairing of cloth articles. (Course work in sewing may be substituted for the required experience on the basis of one year of education being equivalent to four months of experience.)
Knowledge and Abilities
Knowledge of: Methods, equipment, and materials used in making, altering, and repairing garments and cloth articles; power and treadle sewing machines and related special equipment.
Ability to: Operate power and treadle sewing machines and related special equipment; instruct and work with helpers from the resident population; keep routine records; carry out directions; read and write at a level appropriate to the classification.

Sympathetic understanding of and willingness to work with the resident population of a State institution; and personal cleanliness.
