Definition

Under direction, to plan, organize, and supervise the housekeeping work involved in the care, cleaning, and maintenance of offices, corridors, living quarters, wards, and other areas in a State institution; may instruct, lead or supervise inmates, wards or resident workers; and to do other related work.

Distinguishing Characteristics

Employees in this class work under the direction of the hospital business administrator, and are in direct charge of a housekeeping staff of approximately eight or more employees plus help from the resident population. Employees in the next lower class of Supervising Housekeeper I are in charge of smaller work staffs of employees and resident helpers.

Typical Tasks

Assigns work, supervises and gives instruction and training to housekeeping and janitorial employees and helpers from the resident population, evaluates their performance, and takes or recommends appropriate action; supervises the operation of housekeeping machinery and equipment; makes inspections and maintains housekeeping practices and standards of safety and sanitation; requisitions, receives, inspects, stores and inventories supplies; exchanges and condemns linen; receives complaints of building occupants and makes or recommends appropriate adjustments; regularly inspects all quarters and cottages; keeps records and prepares reports.

Minimum Qualifications

Either I

 

One year of experience in the California state service performing the duties of a Supervising Housekeeper I or Supervising Janitor Supervisor I. or

 

Two years of experience in the California state service performing the duties of a Housekeeper or Janitor.

Or II

 

Experience: Three years of experience in housekeeping or janitorial work, two years of which must have been in a supervisory capacity over other employees and with responsibility for the housekeeping or janitorial work in an institution or similar area. and

 

Education: Equivalent to completion of the eighth grade. (Additional qualifying experience may be substituted for the required education on a year-for-year basis.)

Knowledge and Abilities

Knowledge of: Methods, equipment, and materials used in housekeeping work; sanitation and safety measures used in the operating, cleaning, and care of equipment and work areas; use of purchase orders for housekeeping supplies and equipment.

 

Ability to: Plan, organize, and direct the work of others; give on- the-job instructions in housekeeping practices; keep inventories and make requisitions; keep records and make reports; analyze situations accurately and adopt an effective course of action.

Special Personal Characteristic

Sympathetic understanding of ability to work with the resident population of a State institution.
