Definition
Under general direction, in a State correctional facility in the Department of Corrections, to be in charge of nursing services of a group of units in an acute or outpatient treatment section for mentally ill or mentally disordered patients; to maintain order and supervise the conduct of inmates; to protect and maintain the safety of persons and property; and to do other related work.
Distinguishing Characteristics
Employees in this class direct the operations of the group of mental facility units designated as the acute or outpatient treatment section and are in charge of the administration of this section during one of the three working shifts. Incumbents receive direction from employees at the level of Supervising Registered Nurse III.
Supervising Psychiatric Nurses direct the operation of the units through employees in the next lower class of Supervising Registered Nurse I, who are in charge of the individual units.
Typical Tasks
Makes or reviews unit, post, and shift assignments of personnel within the section; inspects and reviews unit operations; reviews clinical records, bedside charts, and progress records; consults with physicians on special cases; may supervise and assist in the serving of meals; confers with unit supervisors on administrative and treatment problems; confers with staff physicians, therapists, and other treatment personnel to plan patient care and treatment; gives general supervision to the nursing and personal care and treatment activities and the welfare of patients in the section; trains unit supervisors, evaluates their work, and takes or recommends appropriate action; confers with the immediate supervisor, receives instructions, and makes reports and recommendations on the management of the section; keeps and directs the preparation of records and reports; maintains order and supervises the conduct of persons committed to the California Department of Corrections; prevents escapes and injury by these persons to themselves, others or to property; maintains security of working areas and work materials; inspects premises and searches inmates for contraband, such as weapons or illegal drugs.
Minimum Qualifications
Possession of a current license as a Registered Nurse in California. (Applicants who do not meet this requirement will be admitted to the examination, but they must secure the required license before they will be considered eligible for appointment.) and Either I One years of experience in the California state service performing duties comparable to those of a Supervising Registered Nurse I, Correctional Facility.
Or II
Experience: Two years of psychiatric nursing experience as a registered nurse in one or a combination of the following:
1. A mental hospital. or
2. The psychiatric unit of an approved general hospital. or
3. The neuropsychiatric service in a military or Veterans Administration hospital. or
4. The psychiatric unit of a correctional facility.
(One year of graduate study in psychiatric nursing in an accredited school of nursing, a college or university, or in an approved hospital may be substituted for one year of the experience required above.) and One year of administrative, supervisory, or teaching experience in general or psychiatric nursing.
Knowledge and Abilities
Knowledge of: General and psychiatric nursing principles and techniques; principles and practices of mental hospital unit management; medical terminology; medicines and narcotics; hospital routine and equipment; principles and practices of personnel management and effective supervision; current literature and trends in psychiatric nursing; surgical nursing principles, methods, and techniques; rehabilitation and physical therapy programs; Department's Affirmative Action Program objectives; a supervisor's role in the Affirmative Action Program and the processes available to meet affirmative action objectives.
Ability to: Apply general and psychiatric nursing principles and techniques; apply the principles and practices of mental hospital unit management; observe and record psychiatric behavior; plan, organize, and direct the work of a large group of nursing service personnel; gain the interest, respect, and cooperation of mental patients; keep records and prepare reports; effectively contribute to the Department's affirmative action objectives.
