Definition
Under supervision, to learn and perform investigation work of average difficulty in connection with law enforcement activities of the Department of Insurance; and to do other related work.
Job Characteristics
The class of Insurance Investigator is a recruiting and development class for work in the Insurance Investigator series. The incumbents are assigned duties and responsibilities commensurate with their background and training. Positions are permanently allocated to this class when the major portions of the functions inherent in the position do not include the most responsible, varied and difficult assignments found in the series.
Typical Tasks
Studies the principles and techniques of insurance investigations and under supervision applies them; performs investigations of average difficulty on an independent basis; investigates qualifications of applicants for insurance licenses; makes routine examinations of books, records and business practices of licensees; collects evidence for presentation at hearings, court proceedings and conferences; testifies in cases involving violation of insurance law; prepares reports of investigation; takes steps to correct minor violations found in the field; reviews the applications and investigates the personal history, character and employment record of applicants for insurance licenses; investigates illegal practices of insurance companies; serves subpoenas and other legal processes; investigates persons licensed under the Insurance Code for alleged violation of the insurance law; reviews accident and claims records of insurance companies and State and local law enforcement agencies; gathers and evaluates facts from insured, insurance companies and from their agents and brokers and other sources.
Minimum Qualifications
Either I
Education: Equivalent to graduation from college, preferably in criminal justice, administration of justice, police science or business administration. (Registration as a senior in a recognized institution will admit applicants to the examination, but they must produce evidence of graduation or its equivalent before they can be considered eligible for appointment.)
Or II
Experience: Two years of experience in investigative work. and
Education: Equivalent to two years of college. (Additional qualifying experience may be substituted for the required education on a year-for-year basis.)
Or III
One year of experience in the Department of Insurance performing duties as an Insurance Trainee, Range B.
Knowledge and Abilities
Knowledge of: Research techniques, accounting principles and procedures.
Ability to: Gather and analyze data; reason logically, draw valid conclusions, and make appropriate recommendations; read comprehensively; participate effectively in conferences and interviews; speak effectively and write in a clear, concise form; establish and maintain effective working relationships.
