Definition
Under close supervision, to perform the less responsible and less complex criminal identification or criminal intelligence duties within the Department of Justice; and to do other related work.
Distinguishing Characteristics
The class of Criminal Identification and Intelligence Assistant is a class designed to give persons who have received training in criminal identification or criminal intelligence duties an opportunity to acquire on-the-job experience. Criminal Identification and Intelligence Assistant is intended to serve as a transition class between a criminal identification or criminal intelligence training program and the performance of the full range of journey level duties as a Criminal Identification Specialist or a Criminal Intelligence Specialist. For this reason, failure to promote to the journey level of Criminal Identification Specialist I or Criminal Intelligence Specialist I within 24 months after appointment as a Criminal Identification and Intelligence Assistant will be considered evidence of unsatisfactory progress.
Typical Tasks
To assist in the performance of the routine, less complex duties involving the classification, searching and comparison of fingerprints; the location and identification of persons who are missing, wanted, or deceased; the registration of specified offenders and licensing of persons and establishments; the sealing of criminal records; the location and identification of stolen property; the collection and correlation of criminal intelligence information and the analysis and dissemination of that information; and other criminal identification and criminal intelligence functions of the Department of Justice.
Minimum Qualifications
Either Isix Months of Experience in the California State Service
performing the duties of a Criminal Identification and Intelligence Trainee. Or IISuccessful completion of a formal training program in criminal intelligence or criminal identification, including fingerprint classification and searching techniques in a governmental law enforcement agency.
Knowledges and Abilities
Knowledge of: Basic methods and procedures employed in criminal identification or criminal intelligence work.
Ability to: Read and write English at a level required for successful job performance; follow directions; accept and benefit from training.
Special Personal Characteristics
Compliance with security requirements, accuracy, retentive memory and keenness of observation.
