Definition
Under supervision, to assist classroom teachers in the instructional program for children in a State institution;.to assist in the preparation of teaching materials, record keeping, and the operation of audio-visual equipment; to assist teachers in guidance of recreation and crafts activities; and to do other related work.
Typical Tasks
Assists the teacher in the conduct of lessons and other classroom activities for physically handicapped, mentally disabled, emotionally disturbed or socially maladjusted children, individually and in groups; operates audio-visual equipment; assists in the preparation of graphic and written teaching materials; keeps routine records; grades objective examinations; checks student test correction; attends to children's physical needs in the classroom; assists in supervising children on the playground and on educational field. trips; confers as needed with teachers concerning programs and materials to meet student needs; and files and stores materials as directed.
Minimum Qualifications
Education: Equivalent to completion of the twelfth grade. (Experience in working with groups of children in positions such as teaching assistant, nursery school attendant, recreation worker, or dormitory attendant may be substituted for two years of the required education on a year-for-year basis.)
Knowledge and Abilities
Knowledge of: Mental hygiene and child guidance principles; personal and social problems of boys and girls; principles and techniques of directing group activities for boys and girls.
Ability to: Operate audio-visual equipment; assist with supervising the learning activities for physically handicapped, mentally disabled, emotionally disturbed and socially maladjusted children; follow directions; analyze situations accurately and take effective action; keep records and prepare reports.

Demonstrated interest in working with children; sympathetic and objective understanding of the problems of disabled children; emotional stability; high standards of morals and speech.
