Definition
Under direction, to assist with operations and to care for surgical instruments and equipment and to give nursing care to pre-and post- operative cases in a State institution, correctional school, or a veterans home; and to do other related work.
Typical Tasks
Prepares operating rooms and surgical instruments and equipment for use; prepares patients for operations and assists surgeons during operations; observes patients' progress and reports unusual occurrences to physicians; assists physicians in clinical examinations and in the administration of inoculations, vaccinations, and treatments; makes and applies surgical dressings; supervises and assists with pre-and post-operative nursing; maintains operating rooms and equipment in a sanitary condition; sterilizes and cares for surgical instruments, dressings, and equipment; supervises the work of assigned nursing personnel; keeps surgical and clinical records.
Minimum Qualifications
Possession of the legal requirements to practice as a professional nurse in California as determined by the California Board of Registered Nurses. (Applicants who are in the process of securing approval of their qualifications by the Board of Registered Nurses will be admitted to the examination, but they must possess all legal requirements as determined by that Board before they will be considered eligible for appointment.) and One year of experience as a surgical nurse, in a hospital approved by the Joint Commission on the Accreditation of Hospitals, or in a California state institution.
Knowledge and Abilities
Knowledge of: Principles involved in general and surgical nursing; aseptic technique; medical terminology and hospital routine; surgical instruments and equipment and proper methods involving their care and maintenance; various types of anesthetics; principles of effective supervision; department's Affirmative Action Program objectives; a manager's role in the Affirmative Action Program and the processes available to meet affirmative action objectives.
Skill in: Performing surgical nursing work.
Ability to: Make and apply surgical dressing skillfully; keep clinical and surgical records and charts, and make reports; supervise the work of others; effectively contribute to the department's affirmative action objectives.
Special Personal Characteristics
Willingness to work in a State institution, alertness, patience, manual dexterity, reliability, keenness of observation, emotional stability, physical endurance, and freedom from communicable diseases.
Drug Testing Requirement
Applicants for positions in this class are required to pass a drug screening test. Testing of current employees who are applicants in an examination or who are transferring is permitted only if the person does not have a current appointment to a class for which drug testing is a requirement.
