Definition
Under direction, to engage in, and supervise, clinical chemistry research work in one of the laboratories in the Laboratory Services Branch of the Department of Health Services; and to do other related work.
Typical Tasks
In close collaboration with laboratory chiefs, plans, organizes, conducts, and directs research projects on health problems involving clinical chemistry; plans procedures for experiments and develops new research or experimental methods; supervises and evaluates the work of technical personnel; actively engages in research work; makes interpretive analysis of data obtained; coordinates research activities with related work of the Department, with other public or private agencies or institutions; prepares reports and scientific papers for publication; and dictates correspondence.
Minimum Qualifications
Either I
Experience: One year of research experience within the last five years in clinical chemistry. (Research in satisfaction of the dissertation required for the doctoral degree in clinical chemistry may be substituted for the required experience.) and
Education: Possession of a doctoral degree with specialization in biochemistry or clinical chemistry or a closely related subject.
Or II
Experience: Three years of research experience within the last five years in clinical chemistry; and
Education: Possession of a master's degree with specialization in biochemistry or a closely related specialty.
Knowledge and Abilities
Knowledge of: Biochemistry and scientific research methodology, especially as applied in clinical chemistry; physical, organic, inorganic and analytical chemistry and current research in clinical chemistry and biochemistry as applied to public health; clinical chemistry laboratory and public health principles; Department's Affirmative Action Program objectives; a manager's role in the Affirmative Action Program and the processes available to meet affirmative action objectives.
Ability to: Develop and originate new procedures; plan and perform difficult research work and interpret results; supervise the work of others; prepare scientific papers for publication; speak and write effectively; establish and maintain cooperative relations with staff members and other agencies and persons; effectively contribute to the Department's affirmative action objectives.
