Definition

Under general direction in a State institution, to have charge of the podiatry work of an institution; and to do other work as required.

Typical Tasks

In a State institution, examines the feet of patients; diagnoses and treats minor foot ailments, including corns, bunions, ingrown toenails, and infections such as athlete's foot; treats patients for foot lesions; applies nonsurgical treatment to the muscles and tendons of the leg governing the functions to the foot; prescribes foot gear and mechanical appliances for the relief of conditions causing foot ailments; fabricates from metal, leather, plastic, felt, or other material, such orthopedic aids as may be required; gives instruction in the proper care of the feet; estimates quarterly supplies and materials for podiatry work; prepares reports, keeps clinical records, and dictates correspondence.

Minimum Qualifications

Possession of a valid license to practice podiatry in the State of California. (Applicants who do not possess the required license will be admitted to the examination but must secure the license before they will be considered eligible for appointment.) andExperience: One year of experience in the practice of podiatry. and Education: Graduation from a recognized school of podiatry.

Knowledges and Abilities

Knowledge of: Methods, materials, and equipment used in modern podiatry practice; theory and practice of podiatry; modern trends and current literature in the field of podiatry.

 

Ability to: Apply methods, materials, and equipment in modern podiatry practice; diagnose and treat minor foot ailments; give instruction in proper care of the feet; develop and maintain effective relationships with those contacted in the work.
