Definition
Under general direction, in a State correctional facility in the Department of Corrections, to examine eyes for defects, to do refractions, and to prescribe and fit glasses for inmates; to maintain order and supervise the conduct of inmates; to protect and maintain the safety of persons and property; and to do other related work.
Typical Tasks
Examines eyes and corrects defects by use of lenses, prisms, or eye exercises, without the application of medical and surgical techniques; determines the accommodative and refractive states of the eye and the scope of its function in general; measures the powers of vision and determines the adaptation of lenses for aiding vision; uses a retinoscope, ophthalmometer, phoropter, Snellen chart, and other aids for the measurement and correction of vision; prescribes, fits, adjusts, and repairs glasses; instructs ancillary medical staff in techniques and methods; keeps records, prepares reports, and dictates correspondence; maintains order and supervises the conduct of persons committed to the Department of Corrections; prevents escapes and injury by these persons to themselves, others or to property; maintains security of working areas and work materials; inspects premises and searches inmates for contraband, such as weapons or illegal drugs.
Minimum Qualifications
Possession of a valid license to practice optometry in the State of California. and Two years of experience in the practice of optometry.
Knowledge, Skill and Abilities
Knowledge of: Modern theory and practice of measuring defects of the eye and correction of such defects by lenses, prisms, or eye exercises, without recourse to drugs, medicine, or surgery and skill in their application; tools, materials and equipment of the profession.
Skill in: Directing the work of ancillary medical staff.
Ability to: Use the tools, materials, and equipment of the profession; prescribe, fit, and adjust glasses for the correction of visual defects; develop and maintain effective working relations with institutional staff.

Empathetic understanding of patients of a State correctional facility; willingness to work in a State correctional facility; emotional stability; patience; tact; alertness; and keenness of observation.
Special Physical Characteristics
Persons appointed to this position must be reasonably expected to have and maintain sufficient strength, agility and endurance to perform during stressful (physical, mental and emotional) situations encountered on the job without compromising their health and well- being or that of their fellow employees or that of inmates.
Assignments may include sole responsibility for the supervision of inmates and/or the protection of personal and real property.
