Definition
Under close supervision, to perform microbiological and similar biological analyses in a training capacity; to receive orientation and guidance in the application of laboratory methods in various aspects of public health microbiology; and to do other related work.
Typical Tasks
As a trainee, on a rotational plan in the various functional areas of a public health laboratory, receives instruction in and performs microbiological examinations for the detection and identification of microbial agents of disease using well defined procedures, periodic check tests of a microbiological nature on water, serological examinations to assist in the detection, definition, and control of disease, and serological procedures relating to blood grouping and typing; assists in the preparation of stains, culture media, and reagents; reads assigned material from scientific literature; keeps records and makes reports on assignments received.
Tenure in this class is restricted to temporary employment.
Minimum Qualifications
Possession of a Baccalaureate Degree with a major in Medical or Public Health Microbiology or equivalent subjects required to meet the academic requirements for certification as a public health microbiologist in California.
Knowledge and Abilities
Knowledge of: Bacteriological, serological, mycological, virological, parasitological, and other microbiological principles relating to the detection and identification of disease agents; principles of bacteriology relating to the examination of foods and water; principles of immunology; common causes of disease and methods of transmission and control of communicable diseases; laboratory equipment and its care. Ability to: Work cooperatively with others; observe safety precautions and procedures.
