Definition
Under direction, to perform bacteriological and chemical examinations of dairy products; to fabricate or assist in the fabrication of specialized laboratory equipment; to assist in training new laboratory employees and supervise the performance of the more routine laboratory procedures; and to do other related work.
Typical Tasks
Makes bacteriological examination by cultural methods of fluid and manufactured milk products, imitations, and ingredients of such products; makes direct microscopic examinations and yeast and mold counts on milk and milk products; assists in making tests for presence of coliform organisms; assists in calibrating and adjusting laboratory instruments and equipment; prepares various bacteriological media and solutions; examines Babcock milk and cream test bottles and pipets for accuracy of calibration; examines lactometers for accuracy of calibration; operates sand-blasting equipment for marking certified glassware; assists in chemical testing by helping to make Babcock fat tests and Majonnier fat and solids tests; assists in supervising subprofessional laboratory personnel; compiles, analyzes, and interprets dairy bacteriological data; keeps records and prepares reports.
Minimum Qualifications
Either I five Years of Experience in Work Involving Dairy
bacteriological and chemical laboratory work. Or II Experience: One year of technical experience including work with pathogenic organisms, in public health, agricultural or clinical laboratory, or in a laboratory devoted to the bacteriological analysis of milk products; and
Education: Equivalent to graduation from college with major work in bacteriology, biology, zoology or chemistry.
Knowledge and Abilities
Knowledge of: Dairy bacteriology and dairy chemistry laboratory techniques; materials and equipment used in a dairy laboratory; various types of bacteria found in dairy products; principles of effective supervision and training; department's affirmative action program objectives; a manager's role in the affirmative action program and the processes available to meet affirmative action objectives.
Skill in: Bacteriological procedures and analysis.
Ability to: Read and write English at a level required for successful job performance; train and supervise others; keep records and prepare reports; effectively contribute to the department s affirmative action objectives.
Additional Desirable Qualification
Education equivalent to completion of the twelfth grade.
