Definition
Under general direction, to have charge of the pathology department and clinical laboratory work in the hospital of a State institution; and to do other work as required.
Typical Tasks
Performs or supervises all tissue pathology work of an institution hospital; performs autopsies; makes gross anatomical examination and microscopic examination of all tissues from surgery or autopsies showing evidence of pathological conditions; prepares complete report on each tissue study, including description of gross and microscopic pathology, diagnosis of all disease conditions, and recommendations for treatment, if appropriate; discusses findings with clinician in charge of each case; supervises the work of the hospital clinical laboratory through a chief technician; demonstrates new clinical laboratory techniques, reviews work of technicians in difficult cases, and serves as consultant to hospital staff members in cases where laboratory test results appear controversial; conducts special research projects; prepares scientific papers; presents lectures and participates in conferences; evaluates the work of assistants, and takes or recommends appropriate action with respect to their performance.
Minimum Qualifications
Possession of the legal requirements for the practice of medicine in California as determined by the California Board of Medical Quality Assurance or the California Board of Osteopathic Examiners. (Applicants who are in the process of securing approval of their qualifications by the Board of Medical Quality Assurance or the Board of Osteopathic Examiners will be admitted to the examination, but the Board to which application is made must determine that all legal requirements have been met before candidates will be eligible for appointment.) andPossession of a valid medical specialty certificate in pathology issued by the American Board of Pathology, the American Osteopathic Board of Pathology, or eligibility for examination for such a certificate as evidenced by a written statement from the Secretary of either Board. (Applicants who are in the process of establishing specialty board eligibility will be admitted to the examination but the required verification must be submitted before appointment.) and
Knowledges and Abilities
Knowledge of: Principles and techniques of pathology; the use of the specialized equipment, instruments, and materials required in the practice of pathology; principles and practices of general medicine; principles and practices of clinical laboratory work; current trends and literature in the field of pathology; hospital organization and procedure; principles of effective supervision; department's affirmative action program objectives; a manager's role in the affirmative action program and the processes available to meet affirmative action objectives.
