Definition
In headquarters, under the general direction of the Production Manager II, Prison Industries (Laundry), is responsible for performing the maintenance and repair work on the Prison Industry Authority's (PIA) laundry equipment statewide; and performs other related work.
Typical Tasks
Performs maintenance and repair work on PIA's laundry equipment statewide; plans, develops, organizes and conducts maintenance and repair training; responsible for developing and overseeing a preventive maintenance and repair program; recommends the purchase and replacement of new and used laundry equipment; may direct the work of maintenance and repair staff as well as inmate staff involved in repairing laundry equipment.
Minimum Qualifications
Experience: Three years of maintaining and repairing all types and configurations of dryers, washers, washer extractors, tunnel washers, continuous batch washers, flatwork ironers (mangle presses), hothead garment presses, steam air pants and shirt finishers. (The three years of experience must be within the past five years.)
Knowledge and Abilities
Knowledge of: Corporate commercial laundry company maintenance programs; principles of establishing preventive maintenance programs; repair techniques on a wide range of computer directed commercial laundry equipment.
Ability to: Effectively plan, develop, organize, and conduct a preventive maintenance and repair program in large commercial laundry facilities; deal tactfully with people in a variety of stressful and unfavorable conditions; effectively communicate both orally and in writing, prepare clear and logical reports; interpret and apply information from detailed technical manuals; establish and maintain effective working relationships.
Special Personal Characteristics
Tact, patience, and ability to work with persons confined in a correctional institution. Willingness to travel statewide on short notice.
Desirable Qualification
Possession of a valid California driver's license of the appropriate class issued by the Department of Motor Vehicles. Applicants who do not possess this license will be admitted to the examination but must secure the license prior to appointment.
Additional Desirable Qualifications
Education equivalent to completion of graduation from college; assertiveness, and experience in a correctional institution; familiarity with thermal fluid heat and steam distribution in systems; and maintenance of chemical balances in wash formulations.
