Definition

Under close supervision as an indentured apprentice, to learn progressively skilled stationary engineering work; and to do other related work.

Job Characteristics

This class is designed for entrance and performance in an apprentice training program leading to journey level status as a Stationary Engineer. Persons in this class are indentured apprentices in training under the provisions of the apprenticeship standards and written apprentice agreements as defined in Chapter 4, Division 3, of the Labor Code. Inability to maintain satisfactory progress in the academic and vocational work in the apprenticeship program is sufficient cause for separation from the program.

Typical Tasks

Assists journey level Stationary Engineer and receives training in principles of: operation, maintenance and repair of boilers, beaters, pumps, valves, compressors, condensors, motors, and engines; maintenance and repair of electrical circuits, transformers, machinery, fixtures, appliances, electronic systems, energy management systems, control systems; and those additional tasks performed by a journey level Stationary Engineer as required; participates in after-hour classroom and/or home study training in related courses necessary to complete the apprentice program.

Knowledge and Abilities

Ability to: Read and write English at a level required for successful job performance; learn rapidly; follow directions; acquire acceptable work habits such as punctuality, skill, neatness, and dependability; work safely; apply mechanical principles; recognize and relate objects to one another from different spatial perspectives; make satisfactory progress in the prescribed academic and practical work in an approved apprenticeship program for Stationary Engineer I.

Special Personal Characteristics

Willingness to work under close supervision; willingness to improve knowledge and efficiency by completing related courses as directed.
