Definition
Under direction in a State correctional facility in the Department of Corrections or Department of the Youth Authority, to supervise and aid in the work involved in installing and maintaining steam- piping for power and heating, and in maintaining and repairing thermostatic apparatus; to maintain order and supervise the conduct of inmates, wards, residents, or patients; to protect and maintain the safety of persons and property; may instruct, lead or supervise inmates, wards or resident workers; and do other related work.
Typical Tasks
Plans and assigns work, gives instructions, maintains discipline, and passes upon problems in connection with the supervision of a force of steamfitters in the installation of a piping system, boiler, or special equipment; makes diagrams and sketches and lists materials and fittings required; anticipates material needs; makes diagnoses and reports on troubles in piping systems; checks and consults with the construction engineer on working problems; inspects accuracy of the work, and machines and tools for defects; studies plans and specifications, and structural layout for possible obstructions or impediments to the prescribed piping layout; maintains order and supervises the conduct of persons committed to the Departments of Corrections and the Youth Authority; prevents escapes and injury by these persons to themselves or others or to property; maintains security of working areas and work materials; inspects premises and searches inmates, wards, residents, or patients for contraband, such as weapons or illegal drugs.
Minimum Qualifications
Either I
Experience: Five years of experience as a journeyperson steamfitter, one year of which shall have been as a supervisor; and
Education: Equivalent to completion of the ninth grade.
Or II
Some equivalent combination of education and experience.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Knowledge of: State and municipal regulations relating to high pressure piping and related equipment, and procedure and equipment used in steamfitting; hand and machine tools used in the trade.
Skill in: Proper use and care of hand and machine tools used in the trade.
Ability to: Detect inferior materials or workmanship; make independent minor layouts; read and interpret plans and specifications; lay out work for others, direct them in their work, and get them to work together effectively; understand and carry out oral and written directions; prepare clear and comprehensive reports.
Special Physical Characteristics
Persons appointed to positions in this class must be reasonably expected to have and maintain sufficient strength, agility, and endurance to perform during stressful (physical, mental, and emotional) situations encountered on the job without compromising their health and well-being or that of their fellow employees or that of inmates.
Assignments during tour of duty may include sole responsibility for the supervision of inmates and/or the protection of personal and real property.
