Definition
Under general direction, in a State correctional facility in the Department of Corrections or Department of the Youth Authority, to super vise a staff of five or more automotive equipment operators in the operation of a fleet of passenger vehicles, trucks, small-wheeled tractors, and similar motor equipment; to maintain order and supervise the conduct of inmates, wards, residents, or patients; to protect and maintain the safety of persons and property; may instruct, lead or supervise inmates, wards or resident workers; and do other related work.
Typical Tasks
Plans, and coordinates operations of a fleet of at least twenty motor vehicles; makes work assignments for vehicles and operators; dispatches vehicles in response to orders; sees that vehicles are properly serviced; prepares and initiates work orders for mechanical maintenance of vehicles; maintains records and prepares reports, assists with preparation of budget requests with respect to automotive equipment; operates automotive vehicles when required; maintains order and supervises the conduct of persons committed to the Departments of Corrections and the Youth Authority; prevents escapes and injury by these persons to themselves or others or to property; maintains security of working areas and work materials; inspects premises and searches inmates, wards, residents, or patients for contraband, such as weapons or illegal drugs.
Minimum Qualifications
Possession of a driver license valid for operation of any bus designed to carry more than 15 passengers, any single vehicle with three or more axles, any such vehicle towing another vehicle weighing less than 6,000 pounds gross. and Three years of experience in the operation and care of automotive equipment.
Knowledge and Abilities
Knowledge of: Operation and care of various kinds of automotive equipment; organization and operation of a motor pool; automotive service requirements of an institutional type organization; preventive maintenance procedures of automotive equipment; California Vehicle Code pertaining to the operation of vehicles on the highway; principles of effective supervision.
Ability to: Read and write English at a level required for successful job performance, direct the work of others; keep simple records and make reports.
Special Physical Characteristics
Persons appointed to positions in this class must be reasonably expected to have and maintain sufficient strength, agility, and endurance to perform during stressful (physical, mental, and emotional) situations encountered on the job without compromising their health and well-being or that of their fellow employees or that of inmates. Assignments during tour of duty may include sole responsibility for the supervision of inmates and/or the protection of personal and real property.

Education equivalent to completion of the twelfth grade.
