Definition
Under supervision in a State correctional facility in the Department of Corrections or Department of the Youth Authority, to drive a truck of less than three and one-half tons and to perform related laboring work; to maintain order and supervise the conduct of inmates, wards, residents, or patients; to protect and maintain the safety of persons and property; may instruct, lead, or supervise inmates, wards, or resident workers; and do other related work.
Typical Tasks
Drives and handles a truck or dump truck; hauls material and equipment; loads and unloads trucks; greases, oils, and keeps the truck in good running order; makes emergency adjustments to the truck and motor; changes tires; keeps the truck supplied with oil, gas, and water, and keeps records of the work done; maintains order and supervises the conduct of persons committed to the Departments of Corrections and the Youth Authority; prevents escapes and injury by these persons to them selves or others or to property; maintains security of working areas and work materials; inspects premises and searches inmates, wards, residents, or patients for contraband, such as weapons or illegal drugs.
Minimum Qualifications
Possession of a driver license valid for the operation of any two- axle vehicle, except a bus designed to carry more than 15 passengers, and such vehicle towing another vehicle weighing less than 6,000 pounds gross. and Experience: At least six months of experience in operating motor trucks.
Knowledge and Abilities
Knowledge of and Skill in: Operation, care, adjustment, and repair of trucks; provisions of the California Vehicle Code applying to the operation of vehicles on the highway.
Ability to: Make adjustments and emergency repairs to trucks; follow oral and written directions; keep simple records.
Special Personal Characteristic
Willingness and ability to do heavy manual labor.

Persons appointed to positions in this class must be reasonably expected to have and maintain sufficient strength, agility, and endurance to perform during stressful (physical, mental, and emotional) situations encountered on the job without compromising their health and well-being or that of their fellow employees or that of inmates. Assignments during tour of duty may include sole responsibility for the supervision of inmates and/or the protection of personal and real property.
