Salary Information

Description

These classifications are distinguished by the fact that employment is for less than six months in duration with no permanent employment. The duration may vary from an hour to several months, dependent upon the size and complexity of the project and number of persons available to complete the job. The employment may be continuous or recurrent, and assignments may vary from job to job.

Skilled Trades Apprentice (Casual Employment)

Under close supervision as an indentured apprentice, to learn progressively skilled work of an apprenticeable craft or trade on short-term projects.

Skilled Trades Journeyperson (Casual Employment)

A skilled trades journeyperson has successfully completed an apprenticeship program in a recognized craft or trade. They are considered competent and authorized to work in that field as a fully qualified employee.

Under direction, incumbents perform skilled work in a craft or trade on short-term projects.

Skilled Trades Supervisor (Casual Employment)

Under direction, on short-term work projects, incumbents supervise and work with a group of skilled journeypersons and apprentices in a craft or trade.

Knowledge and Abilities

Skilled Trades Apprentice (Casual Employment)

Knowledge of: Basic arithmetic, spelling and grammar.

Ability to: Understand written and spoken English and perform arithmetic at a level required for successful job performance; learn rapidly; follow directions; acquire acceptable work habits such as punctuality, skill, neatness and dependability; work safely; apply mechanical principles when applicable; recognize and relate objects to one another from different spatial perspectives; work at moderate heights when applicable; make satisfactory progress in the prescribed academic and practical work in an approved apprenticeship program.

Skilled Trades Journeyperson (Casual Employment)

Knowledge of: Principles, methods, materials, tools, equipment and terminology of the specific skilled trade or craft and current industry safety practices.

Ability to: Understand written and spoken English and perform arithmetic at a level required for successful job performance; keep records and prepare reports; assist in assigning work and directing staff; follow oral and written directions; read, interpret, and work from plans, drawings, and specifications where applicable; and work at moderate heights when applicable.

Skilled Trades Supervisor (Casual Employment)

Knowledge of: Principles, methods, materials, tools, equipment and terminology of the specific skilled trade or craft; principles of effective supervision; safety practices.

Ability to: Understand written and spoken English and perform arithmetic at a level required for successful job performance; anticipate material and equipment requirements; prepare cost estimates and reports; keep records; assign and direct work to staff; follow oral and written directions; read, interpret, and work from plans, drawings, and specifications where applicable; work at moderate heights when applicable.

Minimum Qualifications

Skilled Trades Apprentice (Casual Employment)

Registration in an applicable apprenticeship program for the trade involved.

Skilled Trades Journeyperson (Casual Employment)

Completion of a recognized apprenticeship in a skilled trade or craft or experience comparable in level of responsibility to that of a recognized journeyperson in a skilled trade or craft.

Skilled Trades Supervisor (Casual Employment)

Two years of varied experience as a journeyperson in a specific skilled trade or craft; and completion of a recognized apprenticeship in a skilled trade or craft. (Additional qualifying experience at the journeyperson level in the specific skilled trade or craft may be substituted for the approved apprenticeship as defined by the State of California, Division of Apprenticeship Standards on a year-for-year basis.)

Preferred or Desirable Qualifications

Completion of courses relevant to the specific trade or craft.

All employees must have general qualifications as described by California Code of Regulations, title 2, section 172.
