The incumbent in this parenthetical specialty serves as the principal staff resource person for the California Department of Forestry, Forest Resources Assessment Program. The incumbent in this position is responsible for developing and managing the assessment of the supply and demand for California's forest resources, and serves as the principal staff forestry resources assessment person. The incumbent researches, prepares, and critiques basic economic and demand projections for the forest resources; and will create and refine a systems model approach to coordinating the forest resources data inventory, assessment, and analysis.
Minimum Qualifications for Research Program Specialist

Experience: Five years of progressively responsible technical research experience above the trainee level engaged in the collection, compilation, analysis, and interpretation of forest resource supply and demand data. (A Doctoral Degree in Economics, Psychology, Sociology, Forestry, or Natural Resource Management may be substituted for two years of the required experience.) (A master's degree in one of these fields may be substituted for one year of the required experience.) (Experience in the California state service applied toward this pattern must include at least one year in a class at a level or responsibility equivalent to Research Program Specialist II.) and Education: Graduation from college with a major in economics, psychology, sociology, forestry, or natural resource management (i.e., forest management or range management), supplemented by at least two courses in statistical methodology.

Knowledge of: Timber, fisheries, wildlife, range, recreation, wilderness, soil, mineral, and water resources of California's forest lands; supply and demand assessment techniques for forestry resources; forestry resource values; application of computer techniques to forest resources assessment and inventories; econometric and statistical techniques used in forest resources supply and demand models; operations research methods; Federal forest resources inventory techniques and systems.
Ability to: Plan and carry out forest resources assessment and analysis projects; work cooperatively with other governmental agencies; communicate effectively with persons working in the area of forestry resources research; write effectively and prepare and present technical reports; serve as principal staff resource person; implement analytical techniques of economics, operational research, econometrics and statistics.
