Definition
Under general direction in the Department of Corrections, to perform administrative and coordinative duties in the statewide Arts-in- Corrections Program and to direct and supervise professional artists and staff in the development and delivery of fine arts programming for inmates; and to do other related work.
Typical Tasks
Performs administrative and coordinative functions in implementing and operating arts projects and programs; coordinates projects and directs and supervises staff and professional artists in completing segments of large projects; represents the departmental arts program to other State agencies, public and private arts agencies and artists; makes on-site evaluations of the effect of arts programs on agency client and inmate needs; independently prepares reports and recommendations regarding agency artists and arts programming; develops and utilizes methods for evaluating agency arts programs; performs research regarding traditional and nontraditional private, public and agency funding resources for agency arts programming; conducts studies, assessing the artistic and cultural resources available to agency staff and clientele; promotes the interaction of agency with clients and/or general public through arts programming; assists in the screening and placement of paid and volunteer professional artists; oversees procurement of arts supplies, tools and equipment for agency; participates in negotiation, preparation and administration of contractual agreements with other State agencies and private organizations.
Minimum Qualifications
Either I
In California state service, one year of experience performing the duties comparable to an Institution Artist/Facilitator, Department of Corrections.
Or II
Experience: Two years of experience with an arts agency with the primary responsibility for supervising artists, generating grant applications, proposing and maintaining a budget, and planning and implementing new artistic programs. and
Education: Equivalent to graduation from college with a major in one of the following arts discipline areas: Visual Arts, Literary Arts, Performing Arts, Media Arts, Graphic Arts or a closely related field. (Additional qualifying experience may be substituted for the education on a year-for-year basis.)
Or III
Experience: Three years of experience as a practicing professional artist or artist- (craftsperson)-in-residence in one of the following arts disciplines: Visual Arts, Literary Arts, Performing Arts, Media Arts, Graphic Arts or closely related field. and
Education: Equivalent to graduation from college. (Additional qualifying experience may be substituted for the education on a year-for-year basis.)
Knowledge and Abilities
Knowledge of: Public and private arts funding sources and procedures; California arts organizations and artists; artistic programming in social and educational institutions; public relations methods; principles and practices of public and business administration; supervision.
Ability to: Speak and write clearly and concisely; write grant proposals; monitor and evaluate institutional art programs; interpret, communicate, and apply rules, regulations, and policies and procedures; develop and maintain cooperative working relationships with artists, agency administrators, clients, representatives of arts organizations and contractors, institution staff and inmates; conduct workshops for artists; supervise and coordinate the activities of subordinate staff; effectively communicate arts program needs and objectives to institutional staff; effectively communicate institutional needs and objectives to arts program staff.
