Definition
Under supervision, to assist in editing and laying out departmental publications and articles prepared by staff members for publication in trade or association journals; to assist in the preparation and dissemination of news stories regarding departmental activity; and to do other related work.
Typical Tasks
Reads, edits, and checks for style, grammar, punctuation, and clarity of expression articles prepared by staff members for publication in departmental, trade, or association journals; makes up pages and prepares dummies of departmental journals; writes captions; gathers information for preparation of news releases on departmental activities for newspaper publication; confers with departmental staff members and assists them editorially in the preparation of assigned articles; gathers and maintains reference material on subjects in and allied to the department's field.
Minimum Qualifications
Either I
Experience: Three years of experience in editing or writing articles for publication in a newspaper, magazine, trade journal, association journal, or similar regularly issued publication, or in writing scripts for radio or television production. and
Education: Equivalent to completion of the twelfth grade. (Additional qualifying experience may be substituted for the required education on a year-for-year basis.)
Or II
Education: Equivalent to completion of two years of college, preferably with course work in journalism, public relations, or English.
Knowledge and Abilities
Knowledge of: Grammar, spelling, punctuation, and modern English usage; techniques of newspaper and magazine makeup applicable to departmental journals; library reference methods.
Ability to: Edit and lay out articles for publication; write effectively; follow oral and written directions.
Special Personal Characteristics
Interest in editorial work, orderliness, neatness, and tact.
