Definition
Under direction, to edit manuscripts for educational publications and prepare copy in proper form for printer; and to do other related work.
Typical Tasks
Reads educational manuscripts critically for clarity and logic of presentation; edits manuscripts to attain clarity of expression and to remove ambiguities; corrects errors in grammar, English usage, punctuation, capitalization, and syntax; consults with departmental authors, as directed, regarding corrections and revisions of manuscripts; confers with supervising editors to discuss work critiques and receive training; does necessary reference work to clarify and correct inaccuracies in quotations and citations, and to make bibliographical entries accurate and complete; places manuscripts in the form and style used by the Department of Education; edits tables, charts, and graphs; marks copy to indicate format and size and style of type; reads and corrects proofs; indicates paging; prepares indexes, contents, and captions; does such original writing as may be necessary, including correspondence and reports; attends professional meetings; and performs other job- related duties.
Minimum Qualifications
Either I
One year of experience in the California state service performing duties in the class of Editorial Technician.
Or II
Three years of experience in the California state service performing duties in the class of Editorial Aid. and Equivalent to completion of two years of college, preferably with course work in journalism, public relations, or English. (Additional qualifying experience may be substituted for the required education on a year-for-year basis.)
Or III
Experience: Either
1. Two years of experience performing professional editing work which consists of preparing material for printing, including actual editing, consulting with authors, rewriting, marking type, proofreading, coordinating graphics, and checking proofs.
or
2. Two years of experience teaching English grammar and/or English composition in a secondary school, or in an accredited or approved college or university. and Education: Equivalent to graduation from college. (Additional qualifying experience may be substituted for the required education on a year-for-year basis.)
(In appraising experience, more weight will be given to the technical editing of materials similar to those published by the Department of Education than to the length of experience.)
Knowledge and Abilities
Knowledge of: Techniques of editing and preparing material for publication including usage, grammar, punctuation, and spelling; diction and syntax; and philosophy and practices of modern public education.
Ability to: Abstract and condense reports or studies; establish and maintain cooperative relations with persons contacted during the course of work; communicate effectively; edit and organize the layout of printed materials; do reference work; analyze situations accurately; and adopt an effective course of action.
