Definition

Under general direction of the manager of the State Fair and Exposition, to direct and assist the staff of the Bureau of Exhibits in the planning, organizing, promotion, and display of the exhibits at the California State Fair and Exposition; and to do other related work.

Typical Tasks

Directs and assists in planning, organizing, and promoting commercial, noncommercial, and governmental exhibits, in preparing rules, regulations, and orders governing the entry, display, and judging of exhibits for approval by the Board of Directors, and in executing such rules and regulations; organizes and directs the operations of exhibit subdivisions, shows, and special events; confers with the manager of the State Fair and Exposition on administrative policy; directs the classification of entries, the preparation and distribution of exhibit catalogs, premium awards catalogs, and the dairy calendar; plans and supervises the operation of the system of awards and the number and type of trophies, medals, and ribbons to be used; secures and coordinates the work of judges for the exhibit subdivisions; addresses clubs and organizations; dictates correspondence and prepares reports.

Minimum Qualifications

Either I

 

Five years of administrative experience with expositions, large shows, or fairs of statewide or national scope, at least three years of which shall have been in the direction and planning of exhibit activities.

Or II

 

Two years of experience performing the duties of an Exhibit Supervisor with the California State Fair and Exposition.

Knowledge and Abilities

Knowledge of: Problems involved in organization and conduct of an agricultural fair and in presenting exhibitions of natural resources, agricultural products and livestock, horse shows, and commercial exhibits: history, organization, and purposes of the California State Fair and Exposition; agricultural products and livestock common to California; Bureau's Affirmative Action Program objectives; a manager's role in the Affirmative Action Program and the processes available to meet affirmative action objectives.

 

Ability to: Inform cities, counties, State officials and representatives of other interested agencies on the advisability of exhibits and establish and maintain cooperative relationships with such agencies; prepare premium award catalogs, exhibit rules and regulations, and write articles for publicity; lay out and direct work effectively; maintain an effective organization under the pressure of seasonal work peaks and foresee and meet necessary deadlines in planning and arranging exhibit activities; speak effectively in public; analyze situations accurately, and adopt an effective course of action; effectively contribute to the Bureau's affirmative action objectives.
