Definition
Under general direction, to direct the activities of the Geotechnical Branch; to plan, organize, and direct the work of a staff of engineering geologists and others engaged in complex studies in the field of geotechnical engineering; to provide consultation, advice, and direction on complex engineering geology and geotechnical engineering projects; and to do other related work.
Typical Tasks
Serves as a principal assistant to the head of the Transportation Laboratory and directs the activities of the Geotechnical Branch; plans, organizes and directs the work of a staff of engineering geologists, geotechnical engineers and others engaged in complex studies in the field of geotechnical engineering, including structural foundations, landslide analysis, rock slope design, geophysical applications, drainage projects, pile load testing, and similar projects; evaluates the performance of personnel and takes or recommends appropriate action; reviews economic studies pertaining to geotechnical engineering investigations; controls laboratory equipment inventory and section staffing patterns; serves as department representative or consultant in design conferences, hearings, legal actions, and in providing technical advice and recommendations to departmental staff and others; directs statewide drilling operations for Caltrans and other State agencies as policy permits; directs all geophysical studies and earthquake engineering investigations; reviews plans, specifications, special provisions, and reports pertaining to geotechnical engineering, and makes recommendations; directs research in the field of geotechnical engineering as it pertains to Caltrans' requirements; directs technical training programs; prepares reports and may prepare technical articles for publication.
Minimum Qualifications
Either I
Two years of experience performing the duties of a Senior Engineering Geologist in the California state service.
Or II
Experience: Five years of professional engineering geological experience, at least two years of which shall have been comparable in level and responsibility to that of a Senior Engineering Geologist in the California state service. (A master's degree with major work in geology or a closely related field may be substituted for two years of the nonspecialized experience.) and
Education: Equivalent to graduation from college with major work in geology, engineering geology, geological engineering or a closely related field. (Additional qualifying experience may be substituted for the required education on a year-for-year basis.)
Knowledge and Abilities
Knowledge of: Purposes, organization, policies and procedures of the Department of Transportation; procedures and principles of geology and geotechnical engineering that apply to engineering projects; principles and techniques of personnel management, supervision, and budget preparation; the Department's Affirmative Action Program objectives; a manager's role in affirmative action and labor relations and the processes available to meet affirmative action and labor relations objectives.
Ability to: Plan, direct and coordinate the work of a large staff; analyze situations accurately, and adopt an effective course of action; manage a statewide geotechnical engineering program; prepare complete and comprehensive reports; review reports, studies, estimates, budgets, plans, and specifications pertaining to geotechnical engineering, and make recommendations; communicate effectively orally and in writing; effectively contribute to the Department's affirmative action and labor relations objectives.
