Definition
Under general direction, to plan, organize, and conduct geophysical surveys and investigations of the physical properties of the earth's materials; to supervise a laboratory testing section or to perform special geophysical studies; and to do other related work.
Typical Tasks
Plans, organizes, and conducts geophysical surveys and investigations of the physical properties of the earth's crust including measurements of the radioactive, magnetic, electrical, gravitational and seismic properties of earth materials; supervises a laboratory testing section; assigns and checks the work of field and laboratory personnel; calibrates, operates, and maintains geophysical equipment; interprets geophysical measurements and anomalies of earth materials in terms of geological structure and composition; develops and tests new geophysical applications and procedures for field and laboratory work; prepares reports and writes technical papers for publication; conducts special research projects.
Minimum Qualifications
Experience: Four years of progressively responsible professional work in the field of geophysics, including at least two years of experience in geophysical explorations or in geophysical laboratory work. (A Master's Degree in Physics, Geology, or a closely related field may be substituted for the two years of nonspecialized experience, or a doctorate in the physical or applied sciences with major work in the field of geophysics may be substituted for the four years of required experience.) and
Education: Equivalent to graduation from college with major work in physics, geology, mathematics, or a closely related field. (Additional qualifying experience may be substituted for the required education on a year-for-year basis.)
Knowledge and Abilities
Knowledge of: Principles and practices of geophysics; general laboratory physical testing procedures and equipment; geophysical equipment used for radioactivity, gravitational, magnetic, electrical conductance and resistivity, and seismic measurements; physical and structural geology; principles of effective supervision.
Ability to: Calibrate, operate, and maintain geophysical equipment; conduct independent technical investigations; plan, organize, and direct the work of others; prepare and edit technical reports; analyze situations accurately and adopt an effective course of action; establish and maintain cooperative relations with those contacted in the work.
