Definition
Under direction, to perform field and office civil engineering work of average difficulty; and to do other related work.
Typical Tasks
Performs a wide variety of field or office engineering work of average difficulty relating to roads, bridges, piers, wharves, dams, levees, etc.; assists in the preparation of plans and specifications; does detailed drafting and prepares estimates; makes engineering inspections for compliance with plans and specifications; makes engineering investigations, assembles data and prepares engineering reports; may supervise subordinate engineers or engineering aids in any of the above; dictates correspondence.
Minimum Qualifications
Education: Graduation with a Master's Degree in Civil Engineering from a college accredited by the Engineers Council for Professional Development for baccalaureate training in civil engineering. (Applicants who are pursuing graduate work toward a Master's Degree in Engineering will be admitted to the examination, but must receive the degree before they will be considered eligible for appointment.)
Knowledge and Abilities
Knowledge of: Engineering fundamentals and engineering mathematics; methods, materials, tools, and equipment in civil engineering and construction; surveying.
Ability to: Prepare designs, plans, and specifications for varied engineering projects or features of projects; make engineering inspections or field tests and judge whether plans and specification requirements are being met; dictate correspondence and prepare engineering reports; analyze situations accurately and adopt an effective course of action; establish and maintain cooperative relations with those contacted in the course of the work.
