Definition
Under general direction, to develop, promote and coordinate programs of physical education in local school districts; and to do other related work.
Typical Tasks
Develops, promotes, and coordinates statewide policies and practices for physical education and promotes programs for teachers' institutes in connection with various physical education activities; confers with Federal, State, and local school officials on the development of the curriculum, organization, and administration of physical education programs; evaluates current policies and practices and recommends programs for use in local schools; enforces the provisions of the California Education Code and the rules of the State Board of Education relating to physical education; studies and recommends the purchase of appropriate equipment for programs in schools; conducts research on problems of physical education and evaluates current trends; prepares manuals, bulletins, reviews, course outlines, and teaching materials on instructional, supervisory, and administrative problems in the development and operation of a physical education program; presents activity programs in a co-educational situation for boys and girls in elementary and secondary schools as such are requested by administrators; teaches demonstration classes composed of primary or upper-grade children; assist in the stimulation of interest in the State program of physical education through contacts with individuals and committees in teacher-training colleges and universities; prepares articles for publication in professional magazines; participates in meetings of public and professional groups; serves on committees of national, State and local professional associations; writes articles and reports; dictates correspondence.
Minimum Qualifications
Possession of a valid regular administration or supervision credential or life diploma or credential or life diploma of equivalent authorization issued under authority of the Commission for Teacher Preparation and Licensing. (Applicants who do not possess the required credential will be admitted to the examination, but must secure the credential before they will be considered eligible for appointment.) (An earned graduate degree in education or subjects related to physical education may be substituted for the credential requirement.) and Three years of teaching experience, including or supplemented by one year of experience in teaching, supervising, or administering a program of physical education.
Knowledge and Abilities
Knowledge of: Modern principles and practices of education with particular reference to physical education; current developments and trends in physical education; provisions of the Education Code with special emphasis on the provisions relating to physical education; educational research methods; organization of the California educational system; literature in the field of education, particular as it pertains to the physical education program; existing Federal, State, and local programs and facilities of physical education.
Ability to: Develop effective curricula for physical education; conduct conferences and teachers' institutes and advise on the development and operation of physical education programs; communicate effectively; analyze situations accurately, and adopt an effective course of action.
Special Personal Characteristics
Comprehensive understanding of the philosophy of education; willingness to travel throughout the State; tact; and neat personal appearance.
