Definition
Under direction, to assist the Chief, Museum Security and Safety, California Museum of Science and Industry, in supervising and coordinating the activities of the Museum's security and safety program; to act as the Chief in his/her absence; and to do other related work.
Typical Tasks
Assist the Chief, Museum Security and Safety, California Museum of Science and Industry, in supervising and coordinating the activities of the Museum's security and safety program; take necessary measures to ensure employee and visitor safety; work with departmental management, California State Police and local law enforcement on security-related matters; make recommendations on changes in security procedures; supervise the handling of problem incidents; handle complex investigation cases; supervise and train the security staff; evaluate the performance of the security staff and take or recommend appropriate action; prepare and assign shift schedules; establish strong working relationships with other law enforcement or emergency response agencies; prepare routine correspondence and reports as required.
Minimum Qualifications
Experience: Three years of progressively responsible experience in law enforcement or public safety, of which two years must be in a supervisory capacity.
Knowledge and Abilities
Knowledge of: Principles of effective law enforcement administration and supervision; principles and practices of public safety; regulations relating to park and museum activities; relevant sections of the California Food and Agriculture Code, Penal Code, and the Business and Professions Code; principles and techniques of crowd, traffic and riot control; investigative procedures; security methods; principles of effective training; Department's Affirmative Action Program objectives; a supervisor's role in the Affirmative Action Program and the processes available to meet affirmative action objectives.
Ability to: Supervise and coordinate a public safety and security program; direct, assign and supervise security officers in security and safety operations; supervise and evaluate the work of others; plan and implement security and safety surveys of the Museum; analyze situations accurately and take quick and effective action; maintain a calm, courteous and objective attitude in all situations; prepare clear and concise reports; perform administrative duties; establish and maintain good working relations with local law enforcement agencies, emergency response agencies, local communities and the general public; effectively contribute to the Department's affirmative action objectives.

Additional Desirable Qualification
