Definition
Under close supervision, in a learning capacity, to receive on-the- job instruction and perform tasks which have been designed for persons with mental retardation or similar intellectual impairment to facilitate their entry into a variety of office occupation assignments; and to do related work.
Job Characteristics
Office Occupations Trainee is a non-testing (TAU) class in which persons are given on-the-job instruction and assigned the more limited and repetitive tasks associated with an office occupation. Employment in positions in the class may be for a period not exceeding nine months. The next higher level is Office Occupations Clerk which is the learning and working level classification for persons with mental retardation or similar intellectual impairment. At the Office Occupations Clerk level, incumbents have successfully completed a training program sponsored or recognized by the Department of Rehabilitation or have had qualifying experience as an Office Occupations Trainee in the California state service. Persons without intellectual impairment tend to become bored, dissatisfied and less efficient on the type of assignments normally associated with positions in the Office Occupation Clerk and Trainee classes. Opportunities which, because of written examinations, are not available to persons with mental retardation or similar intellectual impairment are open to other persons through such entry-level classes as Assistant Clerk, Office Assistant I, Key Data Operator, Machine Operator Trainee, Stock Clerk and Mailing Machines Trainee, etc.
Typical Tasks
Receives on-the-job training and develops skills in basic office occupations tasks such as sorting, checking, counting, matching and assembling materials; learns to copy names and numbers from one source on to another; folds materials and stuffs envelopes; packs and unpacks boxes and packages; does alphabetical and numerical filing; may pick up and deliver mail, messages and supplies; may use typewriter to perform simple typing tasks; learns the proper use and care of work aids; keeps work areas clean and orderly; may learn to operate such office equipment as adding, copying and processing machines.
Minimum Qualifications
Demonstrated ability to do clerical work as indicated by a background in work experience or training programs for persons with mental retardation or similar intellectual impairment which have provided a basic orientation to office occupations.
Knowledge and Abilities
Willingness and ability to learn from on-the-job instruction and to perform the more limited, routine and repetitive tasks associated with an office occupation; follow oral, written and/or gestural instructions; work with others in an office occupations work setting; acquire acceptable work habits; and meet production standards.
