Definition
Under general direction, provides forest genetics expertise and guidance to the California Tree Improvement Association, a cooperative tree improvement effort by members of the California timber industry, the United States Forest Service and the California Department of Forestry. Also serves as a Forest Geneticist providing technical expertise and guidance to tree improvement programs undertaken in regions not served by the cooperative association, and directs the Department of Forestry's Tree Improvement Program.
Typical Tasks
Promotes and coordinates the activities of tree improvement cooperatives; provides technical assistance in the maintenance of existing programs and implementation of new programs including developing individual tree improvement plans, selecting superior trees, controlled pollination, scion collection, grafting of rootstock, testing of progeny, developing record systems, evaluating data, establishing seed orchard site trials, establishing seed orchards and their maintenance; designs and directs implementation of similar programs for the California Department of Forestry; serves as liaison between forest genetic research programs of the Pacific Southwest Forest and Range Experiment Station, the University of California at Berkeley and the various tree improvement cooperatives to ensure prompt assimilation of new information by cooperators and to promote scientific research in areas of forest genetics critical to the success of cooperative efforts.
Minimum Qualifications
Education: Possession of a Master of Science Degree in Forest Genetics or a substantially related field. and
Experience: Three years of progressively responsible experience in a genetic tree improvement program. (Experience in California state service applied toward this requirement must be in a class with duties comparable to those of Forester I.) (Possession of a doctoral degree in forest genetics or a substantially related field may be substituted for one year of the required experience.)
Knowledge and Abilities
Knowledge of: Current techniques in forest genetics and tree improvement; plant propagation and culture; forest management techniques and problems; forest pathology and entomology; operations and design of professional tree improvement cooperatives.
Ability to: Plan, develop, and execute complex tree improvement programs; evaluate and make recommendations to enhance existing tree improvement programs; provide leadership in tree improvement cooperative programs; establish and maintain effective working relationships; speak effectively and write clearly and concisely.
Special Personal Characteristics
Willingness to travel throughout the State; willingness to work unusual hours and on Saturdays and Sundays.
Additional Desirable Qualifications
Academic background that includes courses in forest management.
