Scope
Classes in this series encompass those wildlife management positions in the Department of Fish and Game in charge of various wildlife habitat field activities. Incumbents in these classes may manage or assist in the management of a State-owned wildlife management area or game farm, or be in charge of wildlife habitat improvement activities on public and private lands in a designated geographic area.
Definition of Series
Positions in these classes on wildlife management areas or involved in habitat improvement may require the planning, supervision and performance of such activities as construction and maintenance of roads, water control systems, buildings, pens, fencing and sanitary facilities; habitat development work, including cultivating, planting, irrigating, vegetation control and marsh management; and management of public use activities including hunting and fishing.
Positions at the game farm manage the breeding, incubation, and rearing of game birds for use on public lands and land owned by cooperating private organizations; and experiment in breeding and rearing exotic game birds.
Positions in these classes may be required to supervise inmate, ecology corps or volunteer crews; prepare budgets, reports, work schedules, requisitions, and personnel documents; and attend and speak before meetings of civic, conservation, and sportspersons groups, land owners and other public agencies; and do other related work.

Entry into this series is typically from positions in the Fish and Wildlife Assistant series in California state service.
Definition of Levels
Wildlife Habitat Assistant
The incumbent is in charge of a subordinate area requiring daily management but outside the effective daily range of supervision of the Area Manager or is responsible for county-wide habitat development programs in cooperation with local soil conservation districts and other agencies.
Wildlife Habitat Supervisor I
The incumbent manages a small independent wildlife management area; acts as Assistant Manager of a large wildlife management area or a game farm; or is in charge of region-wide wildlife habitat development field activities.
Wildlife Habitat Supervisor II
The incumbent manages a large wildlife management area or the game farm.
Minimum Qualifications
Wildlife Habitat Assistant
Either I
One year of experience in the California state service performing the duties of a Fish and Wildlife Assistant II; or
Three years of experience in the California state service performing the duties of a Fish and Wildlife Assistant I.
Or II
Three years of experience in the natural resources field such as field and wildlife, parks or forestry performing construction and maintenance work on habitat development projects. At least one year of this experience must have been as a supervisor or leadperson. (Experience in the California state service applied toward this specialized one year of experience must have been in a class with a level of responsibility at least equivalent to Fish and Wildlife Assistant II.)
Wildlife Habitat Supervisor I
Either I
One year of experience in the California state service performing the duties of a Wildlife Habitat Assistant; or
Two years of experience in the California state service performing the duties of a Fish and Wildlife Assistant II.
Or II
Four years of experience in the natural resources field such as fish and wildlife, parks, or forestry performing construction maintenance work on habitat development projects. At least two year of this experience must have been as a supervisor. (Experience in the California state service applied toward this specialized two years of experience must have been in a class with a level of responsibility at least equivalent to Wildlife Habitat Assistant.)
Wildlife Habitat Supervisor II
Either I
One year of experience in the California state service performing the duties of Wildlife Habitat Supervisor; or
Two years of experience in the California state service performing the duties of a Wildlife Habitat Assistant.
Or II
Five years of experience in the natural resources field such as fish and wildlife,parks, or forestry performing construction and maintenance work on habitat development projects. At least three years of this experience must have been in a supervisory capacity. (Experience in the California state service applied toward this specialized three years of experience must have been in a class with a level of responsibility at least equivalent to Wildlife Habitat Supervisor I.)
Knowledge and Abilities
All Levels:
Knowledge of: Wildlife food and cover requirements, wildlife habitat improvement methods and techniques; construction, installation, and maintenance of road, buildings, enclosures, water control systems, and wildlife watering devices; soils and land uses, farming and marsh management practices, farming equipment, machinery, tools, and vehicles; wildlife management activities in California; and principles of supervision and safety.
Ability to: Read and write English at a level required for successful job performance; plan, organize, and direct the work of others; analyze situations accurately and take effective action; supervise and perform a wide variety of work, including farming, construction, marsh management, and public use management; prepare routine reports; and maintain cooperative relations with those contacted in the work.
Wildlife Habitat Supervisor I
Ability to: All of the above, and develop creative programs in keeping with the goals of the organization; prepare budgets and program plans; and speak effectively to interested groups and organizations.
Wildlife Habitat Supervisor II
Knowledge of: All of the above, and the Department's Affirmative Action Program objectives; a manager's role in the Affirmative Action Program and the processes available to meet affirmative action objectives.
Ability to: All of the above, and effectively contribute to the Department's affirmative action objectives.
Special Personal Characteristics
All Levels:
Willingness to live and work throughout the State, and the willingness to work unusual hours and on Saturdays, Sundays and holidays.
Additional Desirable Qualification
All Levels:
Education equivalent to completion of the twelfth grade.
