Definition
Under supervision, to learn and perform the less technical tasks of an agricultural marketing program within the Department of Food and Agriculture; and to do other related work.
Job Characteristics
Incumbents in this class perform the routine, preparatory work for the professional marketing classes. Incumbents develop a basic knowledge of marketing principles and practices, as well as the fundamentals of economics and statistics. The class is used throughout the Division of Marketing Services.
Typical Tasks
Gathers and assembles data for inclusion in reports to producers and consumers regarding the production and marketing of agricultural products; attends meetings with dealers, marketing associations and various other special interest groups; prepares survey forms and conducts interviews with farmers and consumers to obtain agricultural statistics and the current marketing situation on various commodities; assists in the compilation and analysis of agricultural data and statistics; assists in the coordination of various promotional and educational events involving California's agricultural products; performs background and preparatory work for investigators involving the regulation of various marketing and milk marketing programs; drafts market news releases, marketing directories and correspondence; assists in dissemination of market news releases via various media.
Minimum Qualifications
Either I
Experience: One year of experience in the California state service performing duties at a level of responsibility equivalent to that of Office Assistant II (General). and
Education: Equivalent to nine semester or twelve quarter units of college level course work in job-related subjects such as marketing, statistics or economics. (Applicants who are within six months of completion and who are currently enrolled for the minimum appropriate required college courses may be admitted to the examination, but must show evidence of completion before they will be considered eligible for appointment.)
Or II
Equivalent to one year of experience assisting in the collection and dissemination of marketing information, direct marketing of agricultural commodities, or other experience in a commercial agricultural marketing program. (Experience in the California state service applied toward this requirement must be in a class with a level of responsibility equivalent to Office Technician.)
Knowledge and Abilities
Knowledge of: Mathematics, spelling, grammar, punctuation, modern English usage, fundamentals of statistics, economics and/or marketing.
Ability to: Learn rapidly; follow oral and written directions; communicate effectively with staff and those contacted in the course of work; interpret and edit written material; write effectively; compile and analyze written and numerical data accurately; make satisfactory progress in a prescribed training program.
