Definition
Under direction, at an assigned grading station, to supervise and assist with the work of a group of inspectors engaged in the inspection of fruits and vegetables for compliance with the processing fruit and vegetable standards of the Agricultural and Administrative Codes; and to do other related work.
Job Characteristics
Employment in this class is seasonal. In no case will it extend for more than nine months in any twelve-month period.
Typical Tasks
Manages the operations of a grading station; supervises and assists in the inspection of fruits and vegetables for compliance with the processing fruit and vegetable standards of the Agricultural and Administrative Codes; trains inspectors in inspection procedures and methods and assigns and reviews their work; selects and inspects samples of each load at inspection and receiving points, issues certificates on loads of fruits and vegetables found to comply with the standards, and rejects fruits and vegetables which do not meet the standards; keeps records of inspections made.
Minimum Qualifications
Experience: Two seasons of experience (totaling four months) in one or a combination of the following activities:
1. The growing, harvesting, grading, packing, sorting, and/or inspection of canning tomatoes, wine grapes, or other fruits and vegetables for processing. or
2. The grading or inspecting of fruits or vegetables for quality, condition, and grade.
(Either graduation from a college of agriculture with specialization in vegetables crops or completion of a two-year college course with specialization in agricultural inspection may be substituted for one season or two months of the experience requirement.)
Knowledge and Abilities
Knowledge of: Fruits and vegetables for processing, their defects, and the standards established in the Agricultural and Administrative Codes; inspection methods, procedures, organization, and policies of the Bureau of Fruit and Vegetable Standardization.
Ability to: Inspect fruits and vegetables for processing and readily detect violations of the standards of the Agricultural and Administrative Codes; organize, train, and direct the work of a group of inspectors; analyze situations accurately and adopt an effective course of action; establish and maintain cooperative relations with processors and producers contacted in the work; write legibly and prepare clear and accurate reports; read and write at a level appropriate to the classification.
Special Personal Characteristics
Keenness of observation; tact; willingness to travel throughout the State and to work irregular hours; color vision adequate to successfully perform the job as measured by the Ishihara Pseudo- Chromatic Plate Test or for persons failing the Ishihara, the Farnsworth D-15 Arrangement Test.
