Definition
Under general direction, in an assigned district, to supervise the operations of grading stations engaged in the inspection of fruits and vegetables for compliance with the processing fruit and vegetable standards of the Agricultural and Administrative Codes; and to do other related work.
Job Characteristics
Employment in this class is seasonal. In no case will it extend for more than nine months in any twelve-month period.
Typical Tasks
Secures, trains, assigns, and supervises crews of inspectors engaged in: inspecting fruits and vegetables for compliance with the processing fruit and vegetable standards of the Agricultural and Administrative Codes, selecting and inspecting samples of each load at inspection and receiving points issuing certificates on loads of fruits and vegetables found to comply with the standards, rejecting fruits and vegetables which do not meet the standards, and keeping records of inspections made; discusses and settles disputes between processor representatives and growers in connection with inspection problems; requisitions and controls supplies and equipment for a district; prepares detailed district reports.
Minimum Qualifications
Experience: Either
1. Two seasons of experience (totaling four months) in the California state service performing the duties of a Processing Fruit and Vegetable Inspector II. or
2. Three seasons (totaling six months) in the California state service performing the duties of a Processing Fruit and Vegetable Inspector I.
Knowledge and Abilities
Thorough Knowledge of: Fruits and vegetables for processing, their defects, and standards established in the Agricultural and Administrative Codes; inspection methods, procedures, organization, and policies of the Bureau of Fruit and Vegetable Standardization.
Ability to: Organize crews of inspectors and to train them in the methods and procedures of processing fruit and vegetable standardization inspection; analyze situations accurately and adopt an effective course of action; establish and maintain cooperative relations with processors and producers contacted in the work; prepare clear and accurate reports.
Special Personal Characteristics
Keenness of observation; tact; willingness to travel throughout the State and to work irregular hours; color vision adequate to successfully perform the job as measured by the Ishihara Pseudo- Chromatic Plate Test or for persons failing the Ishihara, the Farnsworth D-15 Arrangement Test.
