Introduction
The Research Data Series is a streamlined series that incorporates 37 previously existing classifications into one generalized series. This includes Research Analyst I & II (general and parentheticals), Research Program Specialist I, II & III (general and parentheticals), and Research Manager I, II, & III (general and parentheticals). Additionally, a footnote 24 has been added to the Operations Research Specialist III. The new specification includes the current expected work with the addition of data analytics to help capture new emerging technologies applicable to the research fields. The new classification specification provides departments more flexibility to utilize the classifications in areas that were not previously defined but still require the expertise of research methodologies.
This new classification series does not impose structural changes or combining of levels. These classification changes include a title change and broadening upward career paths. The majority of incumbents will only experience a title change. It is expected that the individuals who reside in current parenthetical classifications will be affected by the title change and a class code change. All incumbents will maintain their salaries after placement into the new classifications as a result of the board resolution.
CalHR worked with 15 state departmental Human Resources professionals and Research subject matter experts who represented every parenthetical area of the old classifications to assure that all existing research areas were included.
CalHR also discussed the concept with the Association of California State Supervisors, and met with Service Employee International Union Local 1000.
